Dreams of (Fused) Glass

Sparkly. Colorful. Glossy. Intricate. Such are the dreams of fused glass.

So...that was it for the day's initial poectic drama. Insert smiley face here.

Now, what exactly is fused glass? Basically, it's the fusing of two or more pieces of glass together at high temperatures in a kiln. The art of fused glass is popular in making  a wide range of beautiful things, such as jewelry, tea light holders, napkin rings, bowls -- you name it.

I wasn't aware of how popular making fused glass was -- or that it even existed -- until I was at my friend Kit's home for a weekend visit on Langeland, a provincial town in Fyn (Funen), Denmark.

From a homegrown hobby and experiments with different pieces of glass, she has since 2010 produced different pieces of jewelry and ornaments and created Hagedorn Design. I think it's pretty cool that a housewife in the province found an constructive outlet for her creativity and has shown the Danes her pieces at home parties, clothes shops and crafts fairs.

Here are some different jewelry pieces from her personal collection......

 ... colorful napkin holders...

... tea light holders for those nights you want an extra dose of cozy...

... and decorations for the Christmas season.

And all the glossy goodness is created in this home workshop. And that's not even a full picture of all the glass on stock.

This art form might not be for everybody, of course. By looking it up on the internet, you will find a number of websites for people making fused glass for both commercial purposes as well as a hobby form. And that's all over the world.

Personally, I think it's quite pretty to look at and I've seen some cute, homey pieces that are a fresh, sparkly dash of color. The chick in me does have a fondness for all things sparkly...

Insert another smiley face here.
